I have completed the wall! Stripped old lining paper, applied filler, repair plaster, stain-stop paint, put up new lining paper and finally painted the lot with white emulsion. In the course of this I have learnt:
- having to do DIY for a hard deadline is no fun
- there's a reason why plasterers get paid so much
- stripping painted wallpaper is incredibly tedious, exhausting and time consuming, especially in this heat
- jobs are difficult in proportion to how much the materials involved resist your will; so plaster is dreadful stuff to work with; wallpaper isn't much better until it's been pasted, but not so bad after that, and emulsion is positively compliant
- you can clean a paint roller by directing a jet of water at it so it spins round and all the paint is whirled out; this is simultaneously fun (in a three-year-old playing with water kind of way) and less effort than any other approach short of sticking it in the washing machine
