I have completed the wall! Stripped old lining paper, applied filler, repair plaster, stain-stop paint, put up new lining paper and finally painted the lot with white emulsion. In the course of this I have learnt:

having to do DIY for a hard deadline is no fun
there's a reason why plasterers get paid so much
stripping painted wallpaper is incredibly tedious, exhausting and time consuming, especially in this heat
jobs are difficult in proportion to how much the materials involved resist your will; so plaster is dreadful stuff to work with; wallpaper isn't much better until it's been pasted, but not so bad after that, and emulsion is positively compliant
you can clean a paint roller by directing a jet of water at it so it spins round and all the paint is whirled out; this is simultaneously fun (in a three-year-old playing with water kind of way) and less effort than any other approach short of sticking it in the washing machine
