pm215For those who don't already know: my employers have granted me an extra three months stay in Japan (doing some work for them whilst studying). So although I'm coming back at the end of March I'm only going to be in the UK for a week and a half or so before flying back again...
I shall probably drop into the office one Friday (either 1st April or 8th April depending on how I wind up organising everything else).
I now have to deal with what I think of as logistical details: booking more plane tickets, working out how to shift stuff out of the storage unit so I don't have to pay lots of money for it for no good reason, reentry permit, what do I need to pack, yadayadayada. I find I deal incredibly badly with this sort of task (lots of little trivia as opposed to having one large thing to do). Sadly I'm not incredibly wealthy, or I'd be able to employ somebody else to deal with most of it... The storage unit in particular I'd love to just be able to hand off to somebody else, because it promises to be really tedious and to require me to spend a day shifting furniture and to impose restrictions on when I'm going to be in Reading and when in Ipswich. But I suppose life tends to throw these things at you and I should just Deal With It.
Anybody interested in this probably reads Language Log already, but this entry gives a brief abstract, description and link to a PDF paper about Piraha, a language with a whole collection of apparently culturally-based restrictions (no numbers or counting system, no colour terms, no embedded sentences (recursion), etc).
