food, Cambridge, Thursday evening?

I'm going to be in Cambridge on Thursday; can anybody suggest a pub or similar for dinner before I go back to Reading? Also, if anybody would like to join me in this as-yet-unspecified pub they'd be welcome :-)

In other news, I beat Martin at scrabble 506-219 (or thereabouts). My first two moves were both use-all-tiles words (QUORATE for 100 points and REVAMPED for 70); what are the chances of that, I wonder? Anyway, I choose to take it as a good omen for the week.

Cambridge on a Thursday evening? Large numbers of SGO-type geeks congregate in the Carlton Arms pretty much every Thursday night. I can't personally speak to the quality of the food (since dietary incompatibility means I generally find it more convenient to eat before I go there), but it must have something or they wouldn't all keep coming back to eat it again :-)

It's reasonable pub grub; nothing particularly exciting. Unfortunately the new management don't seem so enthusiastic at keeping up with this newfangled Worlde Wide Webbe thing: to my knowledge, the menu is no longer online, though the old one may be findable via the Wayback machine.

I generally get there some time between 8 and 8:30, and there are usually a few people there already at that point. More turn up later.

I will probably aim for earlier rather than later since the train times and the bus timetable combine unhelpfully to require me to leave the Carlton by 20:45 if I want to get back to Reading before one in the morning.

Also, people speaking latin should be easy to find :-)
