As part of my efforts to not lose all my Japanese ability, and with the aim of taking this test in December, I'm applying for a ten-week course intended to prepare you for the test. This course is in London on Monday evenings, which means that (as a result of my current working arrangements and a desire to avoid train travel at peak times) I essentially get Monday afternoons in London for free. This seems like an opportunity to do some of the Cultural things I never get round to doing because they don't quite seem worth a special trip into the capital.

So, does anybody have any suggestions for Interesting, Improving or Idiosyncratic things to do in London? Somebody's suggested the British Library; I was wondering about climbing the Monument. What else?

For a small, inexpensive and eclectic collection of random art and architecture I'd highly recommend Sir John Soane's Museum. If you like your museums modern and interactive, give it a miss, but if you're willing to exchange a little dryness for a random pile of Victorian curios it's a lot of fun.

Take a journey by riverboat (I've never got around to doing this). [livejournal.com profile] addedentry described a recent expedition and it sounded great.

Also go see something at the Globe on the South Bank, and walk over the bouncy bridge to St. Pauls.

The museums in Kensington (Science Museum; V&A; Natural History Museum); I'd second [livejournal.com profile] venta's suggestion of the Sir John Soane Museum.
The Houses of Parliament.
The London Eye (expensive, and I imagine you'd need to pre-book, the queues are usually quite long).
etc.
etc.

Walk more than a mile on a route that doesn't follow a tube line. Can be combined with other activites once you get where you're going.
